Hi Sonia,

I feel it wouldn't hurt to ask. Explain to your employer that you understand you're still under your probationary period, but are wondering if you can work out a vacation regardless. Be prepared to offer something in exchange, such as a promise to work extra hours over a very busy summer period. If you show you're willing to make this a win-win situation, they are more likely to consider giving you the time off.

In my experience, few people vacation in February anyway, so point out that you'll be going at a time when there are more people in the office to cover for you. In exchange you'll be there when everyone wants the week off for Fourth of July (or whatever summer holiday you celebrate!).

Be prepared to take the time off without pay, because a lot of employers don't allow accrued holiday time until after probation.
