» Feature Writer Jerry Lopper - Rewarding Excellent Service

Every once in a while a server will provide excellent service, service well beyond the norm. When that happens I like to provide a tip well beyond the norm, too. Think of 30%, 40%, even 50%! And I generally take a few moments to thank the server and compliment the extraordinary service they gave me.

Two things happen when I do that.

First, I feel very good about myself for being generous and for providing positive verbal feedback.

In addition, I know the server feels appreciated; you can see it in their eyes and the bounce in their steps as they go on about their business.

It's a win-win.

Another thing to think about, particularly if you're a regular: leave a big tip, and they WILL remember you. Same thing goes with a bad one. If you tip well the first time, they'll treat you like a king every time you go from then on. Leave a bad one your first time, and you'll have a hard time even getting a table.

I totally agree. And, if I'm only ordering something small, btu I'm spending a while there, I'll usually tip at least 50%.

At my favorite bar in college, I'd tip 100% all the time. Then again, for a whole night of drinking, my tab would be $8. Oh, Ohio, I miss you.

Oh, college...how I miss you. Oh, wait. Actually, I didn't drink much in college because I was boring.

I didn't until my senior year. I had more money, lived mere steps away from the market AND the bar, and discovered how lovely whiskey was. I spent my first month of that year drunk, every night. It was fun.
