I was just thinking about this today! We ate Sunday Brunch out at a place we've eaten many times before, and for the first time, I noticed the tip was included in the bill! #$%@#!!!! You can imagine my dismay.
So, to your wonderful article I'd add only one thing; read the bill carefully to see if the gratuity's already in there. happy

I remember a Malcom In The Middle episode like that.

I spent a fair amount of years college student poor. So, I tipped okay, but not really *good*. I tried to make it up with funny jokes on napkins, but that doesn't pay the bills.

Now, I figure, I can afford to tip these people. They probably need the money more than I do, if I can play the "yeah, I can toss an extra few dollars), so, on a regular bill I try to figure out what I'd tip, then add 2-3 bucks.

As a server, I would always alert patrons if a gratuity was included in the bill. It's just bad karma not to.

I also give slack to students or youngsters. Some servers hate them, but as long as they're polite I'm understanding if they undertip. I remember those days, myself.
