- Does Religion Belong in the Workplace?
In response to Does Religion Belong in the Workplace? posted by MelissaDylan:
I don't think religion belongs in the workplace, but God does. Religions are too opinionated and limiting to their own dogma. But God is universal, though the name for God varies widely. We're three part beings, mind, body, and soul. To function in the workplace with only mind and body, or worse yet, only body, is foolish. It's like running a race with your hands tied behind your back. You can run, but not very effectively. Same with workplace functions; you can work without acknowledging soul, but not as effectively.

Sure, do what works for you, certainly. I think it becomes an issue, however, when you expect others to participate, or make it an active part of your work life, as in quoting scripture in business meetings and things like that. Then again, I've heard Yoda quoted in business meetings, so what's the difference between "An eye for an eye" and "Do or do not: there is no try"? Except that followers of Star Wars are far more devoted than any religious people I've met, most of the time.» duckierose - Does Religion Belong in the Workplace?

I think, with star wars versus religion, you're not all "if you don't love starwars you are literarly damned to an eternity in the firey pits of hell."-- posted by duckierose

Exactly. Many companies now pay lip-service to what Melissa was talking about a few posts up. They realize that employees are more than just minds and bodies, and that if the "whole" person isn't satisfied at work, they may leave to find employment that DOES satisfy their souls as well.
I say it's "lip-service" though, because they talk a good game. It's all fine and dandy to tell your employees that they need to put their families and themselves first, that they need to nourish themselves mentally and spiritually, but when you expect them to work every evening and most weekends in addition to the regular 9-5 grind, they quickly realize that you're just talking a bunch of trendy crap.
At any rate, religion is cool, just as long as I don't have to deal with the endless forwards and requests for prayer that religious people seem to thrive on.

I don't mind the forwards, as long as I am friendly with the person anyway. When someone I barely interact with does it, I might get irritated, but it's easy enough to just hit "delete."And the point about not liking Star Wars not equalling eternal damnation, well, that depends on who you ask as well.

They were NOT, as you would say, "good ones."

I had a roommate who was proud of the fact that he had never chewed a peice of gum in his life. He would put it on his resume.
Maybe you're like that.
