Dress codes for work are often confusing.


Confused about what to wear to work? Me, too. It seems like basic terms like "business casual" mean different things to different people, and we're supposed to magically mind-read to figure it out.

I've learned a lot of hard lessons about dress codes. (Short skirt and midriff-bearing top? Not a great idea. Hey, I was 19.) I pass these lessons on to you in the article: Office Dress Code.

The most important thing to remember is to err on the side of caution. If in doubt, stay well-covered (shoulders and toes included!), and wear clothes that seem, if anything, a little TOO professional. No one will fault you for wearing a suit to a business-casual meeting, but they may look down their nose at sandals and shorts when everyone else is buttoned-down with ties.
