It isn't always easy to advance in your company. By becoming an essential employee you can increase your chances of success.

The working world can be a brutal place. Everyone is out to get ahead and the competition for each job is tough. Even when you already have a set job position, keeping what you’ve got can be a challenge. There always seems to be someone better and brighter trying to get your job. Often it takes a great deal of effort to simply hold on to what is already yours. Becoming known as an essential employee can help you keep what you have, can gain you job success, and possibly even help you advance in your company.

What Is an Essential Employee?

Being an essential employee means that you are the person your company cannot seem to do without. Your boss always looks to you to find the answers to his problems. You are the person others seek out when they need questions answered. You are the reliable one who always seems to know what to do in any particular situation. And, you are the one who gets things done.

Becoming an essential employee is not an easy task. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to secure this role. It is up to you to put in that extra effort that is required to become an essential employee. In the end, though, it will be worth the struggle because your job position within your company will be guaranteed.

The Way to Becoming an Essential Employee

So, how do you become an essential employee? As mentioned, it will not be easy. You will have to stay one step ahead of what is expected of you. You will not only have to perform your present job well, but also seek out ways to improve your performance. You need to be better at your job than anyone in the past who may have held the same position.

Go that extra mile and include tasks above and beyond what your boss expects. For example, it may be that one of your duties involves setting up the year-end sales report figures in a monthly report. When presenting this report to your boss, which may be in the form of a written report, include pie charts or other critical information that may expand the sales report and may make an impact on upcoming sales.

Be the first person to volunteer when assignments are handed out. If your boss knows that he can count on you to be involved and get the work done (and done well) he will look to you as a person he cannot do without. Then you are on your way to becoming an essential employee.

Always answer your fellow employee’s questions, especially if they have trouble finding the answers themselves. By doing this, you not only become an essential employee in your boss’ eyes, but in your fellow employee’s eyes as well.

One of the best ways to help you become an essential employee is for you to have great organizational skills. Keep lists of everything, from contacts and telephone numbers, to whom to call in emergency situations. If you have all the information you need at your fingertips it is easier to find the information when your boss requires it. It also makes you appear to be the brightest and most competent person in the company if you can offer the information requested before anyone else can.

Secure Your Job Position and Achieve Job Success

Becoming an essential employee in your company is the best way to secure your present job position. It can also help you advance in your company and achieve job success. Who do you think will come to your boss’ mind when a higher position becomes available? The person he can count on as his most essential employee, of course.
